Rob Farella will be offering a restorative Yin Yoga. This calming practice focuses on postures that lengthen the muscles surrounding the hips, pelvis, and lower back. Supported postures are held for 3-5 minutes per side in this intentionally slow paced, deep practice. Benefits include slowing down the mind, lowering heart rate & blood pressure, easing joint & back pain, and promoting healing, rejuvenation & better sleep. All levels are welcome.
Rob, E-RYT 200, YACEP, began his exploration with yoga in 2003. It only took a year until he developed a “serious” relationship with his yoga practice and in 2007 he began teaching, completing his first teachers’ training at Element Yoga with Bernadette Birney in the Anusara Style. He has also trained with Ross Rayburn, Sadi Nardini, Todd Norian, Sally Kempton, Karen Pierce and various other masterful teachers. He continues to pursue education in yoga and the meditation arts. This ongoing process of learning is what provides the fresh insights that inspire his teaching.
Find out what an Alignment-based yoga class is with Monica DeBenedet. She believes that asana is an extremely beautiful part of the practice of yoga and brings an intuitive awareness to both yoga biomechanics and assists. Monica works to inspire her students to be open to what yoga can bring to their own lives. She encourages her students to move with gratitude and practice with self acceptance and compassion while challenging self-imposed limitations, the cornerstones of her own practice.
Monica Kennedy DeBenedet, E-RYT began practicing yoga in 2001 as an adjunct to running and loved it from the start. Beyond the athleticism, she found yoga to be the most effective way to alleviate her anxiety/panic attacks that she struggled with from the time she was a teenager. Each yoga class she attended was instrumental in her healing process. Each class fueled her desire to teach yoga.
Monica completed her Yoga Alliance 200-hour teacher training in Iyengar-style yoga with Kim Valeri of yogaspirit® studios. After completing the YA requirements, she earned the distinction of E-RYT. She has also trained in vinyasa yoga, yoga for seniors and children, core yoga, Pilates, and Essentrics (Classical Stretch) and barre. Her passion for yoga extends to many different styles, from Vinyasa and Power to Bikram and Yin and Anti-Gravity yoga and she continues to study at the YA 500-hour yoga therapy level with an emphasis on trauma informed yoga in addition to deeper studies of the anatomy of yoga.
If you like a challenge, you might enjoy Eclectic Vinyasa with David Macharelli.
David enjoys tinkering with different sequences. His style is best described as a challenging yet playful, eclectic free-style Vinyasa, one that is rarely the same class twice. David is silly and has a tendency to use rhyming and alliterative cues that draw on elements of many yoga schools, pop-culture references and a charming wit to help students move beyond their fears, to embrace what works and find strength with themselves.
For active agers, those who have limited mobility or if you just want to check out how much fun a Chair Yoga class is, you’ll find Eileen Byrnes in the Senior Center.
When you experience yoga with Eileen, you come away with an understanding of how important feet are in our human experience. She is a strong believer that your feet are your foundation and strong feet keep your body strong. She advocates that if your feet aren’t happy, you aren’t happy.
A floor yoga and chair yoga instructor at several area senior centers and recreational facilities, Eileen also leads group fitness classes throughout the area. In addition, she is a certified reflexologist and a part of the Foot Nerd Program conducted by the international group The Foot Collective.
And if you’ve never tried Yoga Nidra, you’ll want to experience this deep form of yogic “sleep” with Twink McKenney. Yoga Nidra is an ancient yogic practice. It is a systematic form of guided relaxation done for 35-40 min. Studies have shown positive outcomes in a wide variety of stress disorders. Practitioners often see immediate physical benefits – reduced stress and better sleep – and it also has the potential to heal psychological wounds.
Twink has been practicing yoga since the early 1980s. She began teaching 10 years ago and is co-owner of Yoga Dimensions in Newtown. Twink is an E-RYT 500 Yoga Teacher in the tradition of Para Yoga, an Ayurvedic Yoga Specialist (certified through the Himalayan Institute), certified Divine Sleep Yoga Nidra instructor (Jennifer Reis) and certified Hypnotist. She has been immersed in the study of yoga and astrology for over 30 years. Her classes are inspired by current planetary patterns and cycles and they include a gentle, strengthening yoga flow followed by deep relaxation. She will guide you to discover, honor and gracefully reveal your true nature.
