Guest Speaker Bessel van der Kolk

Bessel van der Kolk, MD, is a clinical psychiatrist whose work integrates mind, brain, body, and social connections to understand and treat trauma. His research ranges from the impact of trauma on development and brain imaging to the use of yoga, neurofeedback, EMDR, and theater for the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder. Bessel is a professor of psychiatry at Boston University School of Medicine and is the author of more than 150 peer-reviewed scientific articles and several books including the New York Times best-seller The Body Keeps the Score: Mind, Brain, and Body in the Healing of Trauma.

Alexandra Capaldo – Bring the Hoopla Hoop Yoga
In this class, you will stretch and strengthen in traditional Asanas in a new way, by using the Hula Hoop as a prop. Hula hooping opens the hips and strengthens the core. Beginner hooping tricks and techniques will also be taught in this class, to increase energy and experience greater range of motion in the joints. This class is fit for all levels, with many modifications provided throughout the class. No hooping experience is needed, and Hoopla Hoops will be provided.Alexandra Capaldo’s passion is teaching Yoga to all levels, from Chair Yoga to Power Vinyasa. She enjoys the freedom of dancing inside a hula hoop, where she finds creative expression through moving meditation.
 
Aline Marie – Restorative Yoga
Owner of the recently opened Newtown Yoga Center, Aline is known for her caring heart. Aline guides students working through physical issues (injuries, spinal issues, joint replacements, recovery from accidents, etc.) using a more anatomical and mechanical approach of modern hatha yoga. This same anatomical approach taught more gently and uniquely can assist in navigating delicate emotional challenges including the many levels of trauma and sudden life changes. She is an Artist, Yogi, Thai Yoga Therapist, Yoga Teacher and Yoga Studio owner.   Learn More
 
Robert Kwalick – Tai Chi
Robert is a long-term practitioner of Yang style Tai Chi.  He started his journey 35 years ago, identifying moving meditation as his preferred practice. Since then he has studied in the US and in Taiwan and has taught populations including at-risk youth and members of active retirement communities. A seasoned actor and dancer, passionate about movement based spiritual disciplines ranging from ecstatic dance to yoga, Robert’s teaching creates an environment in which students can move freely, authentically and with joy.  He teaches a quarterly workshop at Charym Yoga and Fitness Studio in Litchfield, CT.
Denise Nobile – Children’s Yoga & Activities
We are thrilled to have Denise back this year!  Denise is the founder of Youth Nation Yoga, located in Brewster, NY. She is also an educator with the Somers Central School District where she teaches English language arts at the middle school level. As a long-time yogi, Denise always shared yoga and mindfulness with her students. She knew in her heart that children needed a practice that supported their growing developmental needs, physically, emotionally and socially which is why she enrolled in Little Flower Yoga’s teacher training program in 2015. Since then she has taught local children in studios, schools and public libraries. Additionally, she’s studied extensively with Mindful Schools, completing their Year Long Certification Course.  Learn More

Katherine has devoted her life to the health of others. A psychotherapist for more than 30 years, Kathryn is a Master Teacher in the field of Drama Therapy and continues to work both clinically and as an educator specializing in the treatment of individuals with anxiety, depression and complex trauma. As an E-500 RYT, NAMA-registered Ayurvedic practitioner and Senior Para Yoga teacher, Kathryn has worked to develop specialized treatments integrating the principles of yoga, ayurveda and clinical psychology. Ray Crist
Ray traveled to Peru hoping to meet shamans to assist his healing process and to learn from them. In his travels he discovered their culture, mythology, and shamanic ceremonies. He found a world of healing beyond his highest expectations and was given tools to work with, as well as the gift of experiencing a healed state of being.
In this workshop, he will explore a flowing Vinyasa yoga practice through the shamanic view of moving energy, and savasana as a bubbling well of healing energy.  Using shamanic techniques for freeing energy, we will see how yoga practice assists the somatic release of stagnated energies (Samaskaras).     Learn More
10:00AM Courtyard

While you are in the community class, there will be children’s yoga and activities to keep the little ones busy.  Denise, founder of Youth Nation Yoga, will help the kids create mindful crafts – breathing sticks, eye pillows, glitter jars and mantra rocks!  And Paula Brinkman will be sharing Peace Love Art, where participants express themselves through art and create peace of mind.  Your kids will be in good hands!

If you don’t want to participate in this vigorous community class, take a stroll out to the courtyard where there will be Tai Chi, Restorative Yoga, Reiki sessions, Reflexology and chair massage.

Lunch, Music & Shopping

12 Noon – 1:30PM Courtyard

The courtyard offers our vendor village, food, live music and pop up wellness demonstrations.  Everything you could ask for from conscious companies.  Shop and support our local vendors.  The market is open to the general public as well as NYF attendees.

Enjoy a bite to eat from one of our local food vendors – Aquarian Catering and Great Seasons Catering.  Listen to live melodius music of The Bindu Band.  Audience participation is encouraged in this divine call and response kirtan and bhajan chanting of ancient Sanskrit mantras, sacred poetry, and music.  Stroll around and get a sneak a peak at the Silent Auction items.  For more detail about our vendors, here’s a list of our supporters. We are grateful to showcase these gifts.

You will also have some opportunities to do Tai-Chi, get some gentle adjustments, enjoy a chair massage, have a Reiki session, experience reflexology, or bask in a sound bath in the courtyard.

100 year old Tao Porchon-Lynch will share her wisdom on how to reach our highest potential regardless of age.. In 2012, she was named “Oldest Yoga Teacher” by Guinness World Records. The twinkle in her eyes and the brightness of her spirit capture you. Her YouTube videos have garnered over two million views. In June 2015, she wowed judges on America’s Got Talent dancing with her 26-year-old partner to Pitbull’s “Fireball.” More about Tao

David Schouela

Our last community class of the day features David Schouela.  brings her vision of ayurvedic yoga, and Tao Porchon Lynch, who at a stunning 99 years of age, was recently dubbed by the Guinness Book of World Records as America’s Oldest Yoga Teacher!

Daivd Schouela
Born in Montreal, Canada, David worked in the banking industry for 20 years prior to pursuing his life-long interest in yoga and meditation. He holds a 500-hour yoga certification from the Kripalu Institute of Yoga and Health in Lenox, Massachusetts and completed the Trauma-Sensitive Yoga certification at the Trauma Center in 2014. Since 2012, David has taught the weekly men’s class at the Trauma Center in Brookline, MA where he also supervises students in the trauma-sensitive yoga certification program for yoga teachers. David has taught an 8-week stress reduction program as part of a research study conducted by the Dept. of Psychiatry at MGH and Mclean Hospital in Boston involving young adults with childhood maltreatment. David is also a co-founder and board member of True North Insight Meditation Center in Quebec, Canada. Relax with Shamanic Yoga Nidra

You loved her 7 Directions meditation last year, so join co-founder Karen Pierce again for another beautiful meditation.   Yoga nidra, or yogic sleep, is a state of consciousness between waking and sleeping.  Karen blends this powerful meditation technique with Shamanic Journeying, a method of inner consultation, to deepen your experience.  Leave the fest deeply rested…20 min of yoga nidra are equivalent to a 3 hour nap! 

Karen is an E-RYT 500 yoga teacher, certified yoga therapist and shamanic healer with nearly 40 years of practice.  She’s also a professional organizer and author of YogaBear, Yoga for Youngsters and co-contributor to Yoga in America.

Relax with a Sacred Sound Bath – Tibetan Singing Bowls, Didgeridoo & Closing Mantra

Jennifer Aurélia (Aurelia’s Light) will perform a closing mantra and lead a powerful sacred sound and energy circle. Guiding participants into a journey through sonic bliss using her voice and sound to tap into our highest vibration of love. She will be supported by intuitive sound healers Casey Dixon and Kelvin Young and Kundalini yoga instructors Chris Smith and Jen Ripa-Edson.

One of last year’s participants said “If there’s a heaven, that’s where she took me!”

  Casey Dixon is a musician dedicated to offering intuitive sound therapy in which he weaves the sacred vibrations of the Didgeridoo, Gong, Crystal Bowls, with the rhythms of the flute, drum and other various traditional indigenous instruments.  Deeply relaxing and transformational.  He is also a master at Digi beatbox and will make you want to get up and get your groove on!

 

  Kelvin Young is a Holistic Stress Management Instructor and Sound Healer.. The first time he was exposed to sound healing, Kelvin discovered that the sound of the crystal singing bowls calmed his mind, relaxed his body, and nourished his soul. He went onto study sound healing with Master sound healers, Paul Hubbert of The Institute for Holographic Sound & Inner Balance and Satya Brat Jaiswal of The international Academy of Sound Healing.  Kelvin has presented around the country in a diversity of settings.  He is passionate about holding space for people to heal and is known for his warm, loving, and down-to-earth way of connecting with people.
